A Zambian AI-and-Satellite Startup Lets Farmers Lock In Buyers Before They Plant
Green Giraffe, a Zambian company founded in 2022 by Joseph Simukoko and Mwiche Mukoma, combines satellite imagery with AI to give smallholder farmers real-time data on crop needs. Its core product is a "virtual warehouse" model: buyers commit to what they need before planting season, so farmers know who will buy their harvest and get paid before the crop is in the ground. The founders built the company after their own export deal collapsed for failing to prove European food-safety compliance, the exact problem the platform now solves for others. The company is now looking to expand the model to Ghana. Why it matters: The mechanism that matters is the reversed transaction order, buyer commitment before planting rather than after harvest, which moves price risk off the farmer's books. Nigeria's Bank of Agriculture Rebuilds Its Lending on AI, Backed by a N250 Billion Government Line
Nigeria's Bank of Agriculture has begun a three-pillar overhaul, restructuring the institution and redesigning how it finances farmers around a new digital core: AI now automates account monitoring, payment reconciliation and loan administration, alongside mobile and internet banking, e-wallets and smart point-of-sale devices that can open accounts, verify identity and process farm-input transactions in the field. Ernst & Young led the bank's Technical Working Group that designed the architecture. The overhaul rolls out alongside a N250 billion (roughly $165 million) federal credit intervention for smallholder and agribusiness borrowers. Why it matters: The new capability is that AI-driven reconciliation and monitoring let the bank extend credit to farmers who were previously unbankable for lack of a paper transaction history, building one in the field via smart POS devices. That is what a N250 billion credit line actually requires to reach smallholders rather than sit unlent.
