Google DeepMind's AI Model Called Hurricane Isaias's Florida Panhandle Landfall as Conventional Models Pointed at Louisiana
Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin, Florida, in early October as a Category 2 storm, NPR reported on October 26. Conventional forecast models initially sent it west toward southeastern Louisiana; Google DeepMind's AI weather model correctly predicted the western Florida Panhandle landfall. The National Hurricane Center began incorporating the model into official forecasts in 2025, and by the end of that season it ranked among the best at predicting path and strength. On Isaias it beat the other models on track but did not match the hurricane center's blended forecast on intensity. Miami meteorologist Michael Lowry called it "by far and away, the best performing computer model that we've ever seen," and noted AI models are updated in weeks or months, against once a year at best for traditional models. Why it matters: The track forecast decides which coastline evacuates, and an AI model now sits inside the official U.S. process for that call, with a named storm where it beat physics-based models on landfall. The limits are on the record alongside the win: it still trails the center's blend on intensity, the variable behind surge and wind warnings, and forecasters describe it as a "black box" that can shift sharply between updates. Hurricane center director Michael Brennan says the agency will keep relying on a consensus blend because "every storm has different forecast challenges." Google did not respond to NPR's questions.
Japan's Carrier Disaster Alerts Went Dark for Days, Evacuation Orders Included, While Companies Patched an AI-Found Web Flaw
SoftBank suspended emergency alert messages to SoftBank, Y!mobile and LINEMO phones at 06:47 Japan time on Friday, October 23, to patch PHP vulnerabilities, per The Next Web, telling users to install a disaster warning app in the meantime. Japan Meteorological Agency earthquake and tsunami alerts returned October 25 at 9:25 a.m., but government disaster and evacuation information was still suspended as of BigGo Finance's October 26 report, with completion targeted for that day. NTT Docomo also paused J-Alert and local evacuation information while keeping earthquake early warnings and tsunami alerts running, and partially restored service on the evening of October 25. Across Japan, cumulative service suspensions passed 500, per an analysis by Assured cited by Financial News. The flaw had gone undetected for more than 10 years and was uncovered during an AI-assisted verification process; patches were released October 21. Why it matters: In one of the most earthquake-exposed countries on Earth, a channel that carries evacuation orders was switched off for at least three days by a precautionary patch, with no attack involved. Carriers split the channel by alert type, bringing quake and tsunami warnings back first and local evacuation orders later. What is verifiably next: SoftBank's targeted October 26 completion, and a team the Information-technology Promotion Agency will set up in November to run AI-driven simulated attacks on Japan's own systems, announced by Industry Minister Ryosei Akazawa on October 23 without a stated link to the PHP flaws.
Vietnam Plans an AI and Digital-Twin Landslide Warning System for National Highway 6, Where a 2025 Slide Killed Three
The Vietnam Road Administration is working with the Hanoi University of Transport and a surveying company to pilot landslide zoning, forecasting and early warning on National Highway 6, the roughly 480 km route linking the Northwest to the Northern Delta, Báo Xây dựng reported on October 21. In late 2025 a landslide on the highway in Mai Chau commune, Phu Tho province, killed 3 people, injured 2 and paralyzed traffic. The design pairs LiDAR drones that map ground under tree canopy, geophysical surveys and drilling, a digital twin of key slopes, and AI that tracks how risk changes with rainfall. Slopes would be sorted into five risk levels, with a warning issued when observed or forecast rain crosses a set threshold. Why it matters: Associate Professor Nguyen Chau Lan says large-scale landslides and rockfalls are only 15% of incidents but more than 85% of the damage, and they depend more on geology and accumulated deformation than on rain, which is the gap rainfall thresholds alone leave open and the one the slope-by-slope geological model targets. This is a plan, with no system running yet. A parallel task to standardize the road safety database runs from August 2026 to February 2027, after which the pilot will be evaluated and extended to other national highways and expressways.
