California Opens Beta Signups for AskCA, a State-Services Assistant Born in Wildfire Recovery
On September 9, 2026, Governor Gavin Newsom announced AskCA, an AI assistant built by the state's Office of Data and Innovation to route Californians to state and local services through a single entry point organized around life events: finding a job, starting a business, accessing family services and recovering from a disaster. It runs on Anthropic's Claude, and the state says answers draw on verified state sources validated by state subject-matter experts rather than open-ended chatbot replies. The prototype came out of the response to the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires and was tested with more than 140 fire-recovery leaders and Altadena survivors, about a dozen job seekers at a CalHR job fair, and more than 100 general users. Beta signups opened the same day for residents aged 18 or older; the release does not disclose cost. Why it matters: This is one of the first state-level public assistants whose test population was disaster survivors, and it arrives with a hard production date: on September 30, 2026, CalHR will use AskCA to power a resume-to-state-job matching feature, with no account required and no personal data stored. The state has committed on the record to grounding a citizen-facing assistant in verified, expert-validated sources. What is verifiably next is whether the disaster-recovery pathway that seeded the tool survives as a first-class flow once the beta opens to the general public.
Ten Foundations Open a $10 Million Humanity AI Call for Community-Led AI, Applications Due October 21
On September 10, 2026, Humanity AI, the $500 million five-year pooled fund co-led by the Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation and Omidyar Network with Doris Duke, Lumina, Kapor, Mellon, Mozilla, Packard and the Siegel Family Endowment, opened a $10 million call for US-based 501(c)(3) organizations. It funds work in which communities lead how AI is built, governed and used across three areas: education, labor and economy, and the humanities, arts and culture. Grants run in three tiers from $75,000 to $1,000,000 for up to three years, disbursed up front where feasible. Individuals may apply through fiscal sponsors, tribal governments are treated as states, for-profits may collaborate but not lead, and 2026 Humanity AI grantees may join only as collaborators. Initial applications close October 21, 2026, at 4:59 p.m. PT, finalists are notified in December 2026 and awards follow in early spring 2027. Why it matters: This is the first open call from the largest pooled philanthropic AI fund in the US, and its eligibility language centers organizations that will govern, contest or redirect AI deployments rather than build models. The $75,000 floor puts the money within reach of small community organizations that rarely see AI funding, even though $10 million is a small slice of the $500 million commitment. Executive Director Beth Goldberg's framing: "AI is being built for individuals and enterprises, but technology in the public-interest gets designed collectively." The next verifiable checkpoint is the December 2026 finalist list. Apply: humanityai.ai.
Calabria's Drone Patrol Publishes Its Season: 4,899 Flights Over 361 Towns, 73 Fires Caught in August
On September 12, 2026, Enav Group released the final numbers from "Tolleranza Zero," a wildfire surveillance operation designed by the Calabria Region and flown by two Enav subsidiaries, D-Flight and Aiviewgroup. Between June 28 and August 28, 24 crews flew 4,899 drone sorties, 897 flight hours and more than 104,000 kilometres, reaching all 361 municipalities at least once, with a peak of 114 missions on August 5. August alone produced 73 fires detected, plus 39 small-scale burns and 12 illegal waste-burning incidents. From July 27 a dedicated digital platform classified each event and surfaced it automatically in the Calabria Regional Control Room, which forwarded alerts to the unified operations centre, Civil Protection and the Forest Carabinieri: 93 alerts to authorities and 31 photo and video dossiers with operational and judicial use. The Italian sources describe drones, specialist pilots and a classification platform; none claims AI detection, and neither do we. Why it matters: Most drone-for-wildfire coverage is pilots or procurement; this is a completed season with audited counts, one of the few European datasets a regional civil-protection agency can compare itself against on flights per municipality, fires per flight hour and dossiers per alert. What is newly true is that a national air-navigation operator, not a fire service, ran the patrol and closed the loop into the region's own control room. Open for 2027 is whether the region funds a repeat and whether detection moves from crew observation to automated classification.
Alerto, a Sensor-to-Responder Disaster Alert App From a Woman-Led Filipino Startup, Wins IPOPHL's 2026 Socially Relevant Technologies Contest
Alerto, an AI-assisted disaster alert system from WiredField Philippines Inc., took first place in the professional category of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines' 2026 Socially Relevant Technologies Contest, held at the University of Makati under the theme "AI-Driven Green and Inclusive Technologies for Climate-Resilient Filipino Communities," per September 12, 2026 reporting. Five finalists competed in each of the professional and youth categories; the top three in each receive cash prizes and help securing IP protection, with amounts undisclosed. Per earlier Philippine Information Agency and DOST coverage, the app, built by WiredField founder and CEO Cristina Macaraig with DOST and DICT backing, links smoke detectors, fire alarms and flood sensors directly to local responders through a decentralized command center, so a tripped device alerts the property owner and the nearest responders even when nobody can call. Why it matters: The Philippines sits at the top of most global disaster-risk indices, and Alerto is a locally built, locally owned alerting layer sold to municipal governments rather than a donor-funded pilot. The contest win is the new fact; the product predates it. What changes is IP protection and visibility for a small startup selling to local government units, and what is verifiably next is whether IPOPHL's support turns into a filed patent and whether any LGU contracts follow.
