Half of France's Fire Services Now Start the Day With FireWatch, the State's AI-and-Satellite Fire Detector

France's civil security directorate (DGSCGC) and space agency CNES, with the Kayrros-SERTIT consortium, have taken FireWatch from a four-year development project to daily operational use in the 2026 fire season. The platform fuses satellite passes with AI to auto-detect fire starts, including in areas with no camera or lookout coverage, refreshing hotspot detection as often as every 10 minutes, and couples detection to the ForeFire spread-simulation model plus building-defensibility assessment. More than 40 departmental fire and rescue services (SDIS), nearly half of France's emergency services, now use it daily alongside the national crisis center COGIC, and the system has run 28 rapid-mapping activations in a season that has already burned over 119,000 hectares in France. Why it matters: This is one of the first cases of a national government running AI fire detection as standard civil-protection infrastructure rather than a pilot, with detection, spread simulation, and mapping in one state-operated loop. UNDP Puts an $84 Million, Four-Year Price Tag on Tajikistan's Development, With Climate Resilience the Biggest Line

UNDP has submitted a new country program for Tajikistan covering 2027-2030 with an indicative budget of $84.07 million. Climate and environmental resilience takes the largest share at $35.84 million, ahead of $29.14 million for employment, skills and economic development and $19.09 million for governance, justice and human rights. The AI component is unusually concrete for a country program: a measurable target of moving Tajikistan from 130th place (2025) to 120th by 2030 on an index of readiness for responsible AI adoption. Why it matters: Country programs are where development AI rhetoric either gets a budget or does not, and this one puts numbers against both climate resilience and AI readiness in one of Central Asia's most disaster-exposed states, the same country installing hundreds of glacial-flood warning systems. The UN Publishes Its Own AI Scorecard: 2 Million Children on Adaptive Textbooks, 7,500 Methane Alerts, TB Screening in Ethiopian Mines
